Native Plant Classes

Spring is the best time for shopping expeditions to native plant nurseries, visits to native plant gardens, and for learning more by taking some classes.
Standford University Continuing Education is offering a class on California Native Plants April - June. I took this class, which is now in its third year, the first time it was offered, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Peigi Duvall, the teacher, is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about native plants. When I took the class, I especially enjoyed our guest speakers. We had an expert on oaks, then one of the formost authorities on desert flora, and finally a wildlife habitat expert. The field trips were fun and educational and a great opportunity to get to know other budding native plant enthusiasts. The class does not have an exclusive focus on gardening with native plants, and I liked that because I wanted to information about the bigger picture and felt that the class really offered that.
CNPS, Regional Parks Botanic Garden, and Pacific Horticulture jointly offer a two day symposium on native plant gardening: Growing Natives: Celebrating California's Beauty in Dry Times. The symposium, on March 28 and March 29, offers a variety of talks and workshops. The visit to Tilden Botanic Garden alone might be worth the trip. And with book sales, seed sales, and garden tours, everyone will find something to enjoy.
