On a walk on Wednesday, I saw a pair of wonderful, large, healthy, unnervingly calm coyotes, quite close, huge bushy tails - but I couldn't get pictures for fumbling with frustration, gloves, leash, camera etc. They were eying up our rat terrier Duncan I think, as a tasty snack. They trotted on their way and didn't bother us. Coyotes mate for life, and they looked like a well mated couple.
This morning - wonderful fungus popping along our driveway. Don't know what they are I'm afraid - will try to key them out later (with my subrudimentary keying skills) - but man - what power, pushing through the earth. This one has a yellow glossy surface breaking out under a white soft blankety coating.
Another is wearing a fashionable little clod hat.
Size comparison:
The day before, Duncan saw this little guy wandering over my dad's carpet! We quickly put him under glass:
He or she's about an inch and a half long. Common California Scorpion I think. Nocturnal, eat bugs, sting is painful but no long term damage.
Here he is inching towards freedom - far from the house!
And away he goes...
I put a nice rock near by and he crawled under.
