I bet it's fun to hear the seeds pinging on the sides of the can though!

Healingmagichands - thanks so much for that history of the term "stratification." Makes a lot of sense! Someone at the meeting said the term made sense to her because her seed containers tend migrate to the lower strata of the refrigerator! LOL!
Thanks as ever for dropping by with your comments - I'll be back in circulation as soon as I have processed the 40 gazillion photos I took in my short trip to Savannah!Country Mousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13294472166693008328noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497277770771473008.post-27138962769980093982009-11-17T08:47:25.083-08:002009-11-17T08:47:25.083-08:00I did not find this post too wordy at all. But then, look at some of my posts!

I believe that they started calling the process of aging seeds stratification because of the method originally used. For example, if you are stratifying ginseng, you make a wood frame box with a screen mesh in the bottom. Then you put in a layer of sand, a layer of seeds, a layer of sand, a layer of seeds, etc repeat until box is full, then cover with a screen mesh. You leave it alone for a year or so, making sure that it does not dry out too much.

Anyway, layers piled on layers: Stratification. Eventually the term became applied to all processes that induce a seed to germinate, whether it be freezing and thawing or whatever series of actions will convince the embryo that it is time to sprout.healingmagichandshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03785882461027155830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497277770771473008.post-79624895469185324362009-11-16T22:20:32.687-08:002009-11-16T22:20:32.687-08:00Wordy.. maybe, but very concise with lots of great...Wordy.. maybe, but very concise with lots of great tips. I watched the main propagator at Annie's Annuals man handle seedlings, but by their leaves she said you can't really hurt them, especially if they're really small.
