A coyote tale, fungus amungus - and a sting in the tail of a different sort

On a walk on Wednesday, I saw a pair of wonderful, large, healthy, unnervingly calm coyotes, quite close, huge bushy tails - but I couldn't get pictures for fumbling with frustration, gloves, leash, camera etc. They were eying up our rat terrier Duncan I think, as a tasty snack. They trotted on their way and didn't bother us. Coyotes mate for life, and they looked like a well mated couple.

This morning - wonderful fungus popping along our driveway. Don't know what they are I'm afraid - will try to key them out later (with my subrudimentary keying skills) - but man - what power, pushing through the earth. This one has a yellow glossy surface breaking out under a white soft blankety coating.

Another is wearing a fashionable little clod hat.

Size comparison:

The day before, Duncan saw this little guy wandering over my dad's carpet! We quickly put him under glass:

He or she's about an inch and a half long. Common California Scorpion I think. Nocturnal, eat bugs, sting is painful but no long term damage.

Here he is inching towards freedom - far from the house!

And away he goes...

I put a nice rock near by and he crawled under.

Oh, that is so cool. I wouldn't want to have that scorpion in my bedroom. How do the mushrooms do it? Persistence, I'd say....;->
Is this Fungus Friday and nobody told me? Love your mushroom millinery. Go check out another good fungi post at Tulips in the Woods.

Fungus Friday, eh? Wordless Wednesday, Bloom day - What other traditions are sprouting up out there! Great fun!
Glad to hear you and Duncan survived the coyote encounter, even if you couldn't quite manage a photo. (Why do they never show up when your hands are free?) Love the toadstools. They always bring out the child in me--thoughts of little fairy creatures flitting around under them, and all that. Not so fond of the scorpions... :) but very cool photos!

I like that... Fungus Friday, neato. Have you ever seen a "dead man's foot" fungus (aka "dog turd fungus")? They can push through asphalt. Amazing. They are symbiotic with our native oaks. Your fungi are much prettier though! Glad you got through you encounter with Wile E. and his girlfriend ok.

Too bad, we could have had Salamander Saturday, but I wasn't paying attention...

I've seen too many Saturday B grade monster movies to be comfy around scorpions! Even saying that I would save it and move him outdoors. Have you seen Paul Stamets presentation on TED Talks? Excellent...
Have a good weekend~~gail

Very neat that you found a scorpion! I like living among and with nature like you do.
